Traditional Markets of Jakarta

Instead of pushing a trolley down an air-conditioned aisle how about visiting a traditional market? You can take children with you but remember it may be too hot for the little ones. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes, leave your credit card at home and take a friend, or maid along. You will experience a different way to shop, see many friendly faces and learn how to haggle, which can be fun and possibly addictive! Many stall-holders speak English, you are not the first foreigner they have seen. Go with an open mind, but not an open handbag and enjoy. Below is a list of some we have personally tried and tested for starters.

Block A	Jl.Panglima Polim Raya	Fruit and vegetable, clothes, household goods, gold jewelry.	Two story building with gold jewellery shops upstairs. Shoes, clothes, stationary, household, party supplies, and sports equipment on ground floor.Walk through to rear of building for fresh fruit and vegetables.
Pasar Baru	Pasar Baru	Textiles, shoes, watches, clothes, Indian spices. Second hand and retro clothes in Metro Shopping Centre.	A semi-covered pedestrian street! Lots of large fabric shops. Discount household shop Go-Lo with lots of knick knacks, interesting finds. Parallel to Pasar Baru lots of sports shops and soft furnishings.
Pasar Mayestik (Nov.2010 - central market currently under renovations, shops relocated around demolished site - Nov 2010)	Jl.Kyai Maja Kebayoran Baru	Fabrics, haberdashery, stationary, household goods.	Two entrances. Rear entrance has popular fabric shops and tailors. Fixed prices, but have discounts. Main entrance has a 2 storey building (no AC!). Top floor has dressmakers, embroidery on anything and alterations. Grd floor, haberdashery shops and nearby Toko Maju with fixed higher prices. Local store Esa Genangku with household goods. Buku Anggrek at rear entrance for all stationary and paints.
Tanah Abang	Jl.H.Fachrudin	Textiles	New air conditioned building. Loads of fabrics stalls at very reasonable prices. Upstairs lots of clothing stands some selling minimum 3 pieces.
Pasar Santa	Jl.Cipaku 1 (off Jl.Walter Monginsidi)	Fruit and Vegetables. Household goods.
Gem Market	Jatinegara Train Station Bekasi Barat Raya St. Pisangan Baru Village, Matraman East Jakarta City	Semi-precious and precious stones.	Take someone who knows stones.
