There is not as good a selection and variety of toys available in Jakarta as perhaps in your home country so you may want to consider this when you visit home, if there is something very specific requested for a birthday or christmas it is prudent to plan ahead!

Animaland
Check out this cute place in FX Lifestyle Xenter. The idea is you choose a semi-stuffed furry animal from the vast range and then fill its tummy with the stuffing provided. You can even include a little sound box. Your cuddly animal is then sewn up by the friendly staff. There is also a fabulous range of clothes and costumes to buy, including Cowgirl, Fireman, Robin Hood and even a traditional German outfit. They would make great presents. Animaland also has a cafe serving snacks and you can host a party in their playground.

The salesgirl advised that they use non toxic paint and quoted one month for orders of bigger items to be completed. Marcy et Amie
Founded in 2007 in Surabaya, this delightful shop sells beautiful rag dolls like those made in the past. There are both girl and boy dolls, which are sold without clothes, but you can choose an outfit from the vast range available or even make your own! Accessories and wooden beds are also available. Once you have bought your doll the child will receive a certificate and a book in which you are encouraged to write down up to a 100 so-called kindnesses. For a minimal extra cost at the back of the shop is a small play area (bring socks) where children can bring their dolls and make believe. Craft activities are also on offer and you can hold a birthday party there.

The man running this shop used to work at Red Feather but has now set up his own shop. The Yakkum Rehabilitation Centre and Shop
If in Yogyakarta, you should try and make time to visit this centre. For the last 25 years it has been working with physically disabled young people, aiming to rehabilitate them physically and ultimately to become independent. Yakkum clients are involved in the workshops that make and sell a range of products you may have seen at the bazaars: beautiful wooden puzzles and toys, felt characters, and the famous large rocking horses sold in Harrods, London. All the toys are certified and the paint meets EU safety standards. There is a factory shop at the centre but if you make an appointment in advance you can meet and talk with the young producers and their dynamic director, Dr. Istianto Kuntjoro. Your children may play with the samples in the shop!

Outdoor Toys & Equipment

If you are interested in having some playground equipment in your own garden, shop around for quotes. There is a huge variation in price among suppliers of Little Tikes play systems for example. Many outlets on Jl. R.S. Fatmawati sell the locally-made slide and swing sets. These are not made to international safety standards but some are better made than others. Look out for slides with a very steep slope and too short an end. Ace Hardware sell a three-piece good quality set (slide, swing, see-saw) for about Rp 4 million. Their trampolines are also very popular (see below).

Mangga Dua is another good place for equipment.

Yayasan Balita Sehat
The Yayasan has a Toy Library and it rents out baby equipment and on weekends, tables and chairs. They also sell costumes including capes, princess dresses, cowboy and mermaid outfits. Toy Library
You can borrow children’s toys, puzzles, books, games, videos and DVD's etc. Depending on the item, you pay a small fee to borrow the chosen items on a monthly basis. It’s a great way for your child to enjoy and experience different toys without having to undertake the expense yourself of buying a costly toy that might just sit in the toy box and not be played with. You will need to complete a registration form and pay a small fee. Bring a copy of your Kitas along with you in order to register.
For those people on the way out of Jakarta or looking to spring clean, the Yayasan gladly welcomes any donations of unwanted children’s toys to add to the toy library.
