Tips to consider before buying.

If you wish to buy indoor furniture made of solid wood in Jakarta, I would recommend you to check the following four points:

1. The dryness of the wood.
This is a basic point. The level of moisture inside the wood should be below 14%. If it is above 14% the wood will crack after a few months in your home. So the furniture maker should oven-dry the timber for around 4 weeks, then have a special measuring device to check the dryness of the furniture he intends to sell to you. He should do this whilst you are present. There is a tool for checking moisture content that can be purchased at this store:

2. No iron screws, no nails, but wooden dowels only.
You have to request furniture that is made using wooden dowels only during the wood-panel assembling process. Iron screws or nails are not strong enough to achieve long lasting furniture.

3. Water colours for wood.
The best process to colour the wood is to use water-based colours.
That is the traditional French cabinet-makers‘ way. The varnish should be applied once the wood has been tainted. The lighter the colour, the better you will see the grains of the wood. Natural wood colours are also beautiful.

4. The right wood species.
Indonesia has a large variety of wood species to offer. The most common ones in Java are teak and mahogany. There are more rare types: mango wood, Jackfruit wood, Indian Rosewood, Rain Tree (Trembesi), and Sapodilla wood.
The larger the furniture you wish to order, the stronger the wood should be.
For a large dining table or a large bed I would recommend mango wood, mahogany, or teak. For smaller furniture, you could choose other woods.

Duta Interiors
Make large play mats, children’s sofa beds, beanbags and other soft furnishings. Ask to see their catalogues which include Australian Freedom Furniture or take along your own ideas, pictures and measurements for them to copy. They are helpful but you must ask and engage them. The shop displays a limited collection of painted children’s furniture but you can browse through their catalogues or take your designs and have them made. Can take 4-6 weeks. A 30 percent deposit is required when ordering. Also stocks fun children's bed linen with original, beautiful designs using appliqué. Check the sizing though, single duvet covers are super single size so larger than standard UK single size.

Pikitra has a large range of ready-made wooden and soft furniture, specialising in lovely embossed paint finishes, as well as a small range of children’s bed linen. You can buy everything from change tables and cots, to kid-sized sofas and chairs. Made-to-order will take about 4-6 weeks. They sell gorgeous painted wooden door and drawer handles in the shapes of flowers and insects. This store has a good range of locally made cots and change tables. They also make wardrobes and four-poster beds for older children. All sets include mattresses, mosquito nets and matching sheets and bedding. They have a model of a baby crib that converts to a bed when the child is older.

The Iron Workshop - NEW LISTING March 2012
After following a recommendation i had a gorgeous wrought iron shelf/bookstand/server made by Denny Adisasmita at the Iron Workshop. Not only was i delighted with the outcome (Denny helped with the design ideas etc) and the workmanship, the service was great too. His English is good and he returns calls within a short time. This is a fun shop full of colourful and modern knickknacks for your home. There is a range of those thick padded floor cushions and bean bags in bright colours. Carpets

The majority of houses have marble floor and so to protect young heads, knees and bums you may want to have some carpet fitted or have a length of carpet somewhere in the house. If you drive along Jl Fatmawati you will see lots of shops selling carpets. Don't expect a bargain, however the price does include coming to your house to measure up, finishing off the edges and laying it for you. Here are a few of the shops to get you started;
