There are plenty of supermarkets to choose from in Jakarta. Product quality, choice and service is increasing all the time which is excellent news for the consumer! Imported items are often displayed separately, special dietary needs are to be found almost everywhere and organic produce is a common sight now.

It’s very clean, the staff are helpful and the range of imported goods is vast and of good quality. The meat section has imported (Australian and US) frozen and chilled meats as well as local products. The pork counter is kept separate and has a reasonable range of cuts and cold meats. There is an excellent seafood section where your choice will be cleaned and cut as you wish. Fruit and vegetables are found locally and from overseas, with a large range of organic vegetables from Bogor (see organic chapter in this section).
The baby food range consists of purees and juices from Gerber (including the Tender Harvest organic range), Heinz and Nestle, and Farex (Australia) baby cereals and porridge. Most of the major brands of formula are stocked, all locally produced under licence, including low lactose and soy formulas. There is a large selection of milk available – fresh, UHT, soy and rice – from both local and imported brands. You will also find a wide range of imported kids’ biscuits and cereal bars. The disposable nappy range includes Pampers, Huggies and Goodnights from the US (including pull on styles), Mamy Poko from Thailand, Fitti, Softlove and Petpet

Hero
A huge and popular chain of supermarkets, Hero is in everyone’s neighbourhood. Has a good selection of local and imported fruits and vegetables; some are organic and pesticide free. The meat section is also good and the service is great. They will cut your selection any way you want it and they do practice good hygiene. Baby cereal is mainly the local brands which are generally high in sugar content, though the Gerber brand is not too bad. Stocks Gerber purees and toddler meals. The snacks are generally Gerber’s Graduates biscuits and Farley’s rusks. Petit Miam yogurts and good fruit juices, guava being a favourite. They supply the Alam Murni organic milk in the dairy section which is delivered daily so get it in the morning as it sells out quickly. Imported brands include Pura from Australia and Anchor from New Zealand. Soy milk also available. Most of the formulas are sold here and are normally well stocked, including soy and lactose free varieties. Nappies, wipes and baby products including bottles, dummies, bottle brushes and teats in the Chicco and Pigeon brands are in ample supply.

Kem Chicks
This is a small supermarket that carries a large variety of imported goods as well as local products. It has an excellent bakery section which stocks freshly baked as well as imported breads, savories and sweet treats. The meat section has imported and local cuts and there is a good deli section too. Fruit and vegetables consist of a selection of imported and local products. There is only a limited range of baby food, formula or baby toiletries. The disposable nappy range includes US made Pampers and Huggies (including the pull on types). For older children there is a reasonable choice of imported biscuits and snacks available. If you can’t get to the store yourself, Kem Chicks also offers a home delivery service within Kemang from Monday to Saturday. The minimum order is Rp 200,000 and cash on delivery is required. The Food Hall
Revamped this year, this is the high end of supermarket shopping. Fruit and vegetables with organic produce from local and imported suppliers. Meat, poultry, and fish are of very high quality. Fresh and UHT milks, soy milk and formulas including lactose free and soy are available.They also sell a range of soy ice cream. There is a health food aisle and organic products. Now stocks some Marks and Spencer and Waitrose products and has items for special diets. Offers usual baby products and also has puree jars from Heinz, Gerber, Tender Harvest etc. and also Farleys rusks.
Most of the newer shopping malls have The Food Hall as their supermarket.

Matahari Supermarket
A large, clean store whose baby aisle is filled with a good stock of formulas, including soy and low lactose, along with snacks and cereals. Some imported children’s breakfast cereals and meusli bars are available, however, jars of baby food are not stocked. Local brand milks and some imported milks are stocked as is soy milk. There is also an in-house bakery.The usual range of bottles and baby accessories, nappies and toiletries are available. You should also check in the Matahari department store above the supermarket as more baby items, from brands such as Pigeon and Chicco, are available in the children’s wear section. Party supplies are also sold here.

Very popular French hypermarket now in many parts of Jakarta. Has a great selection of fruit and vegetables, with most produce being local, some imported. Vast meat and fish selection, but check quality. Well-stocked formulas including soy and low lactose. Not a large selection of jars, baby juices, and snacks but has a lot of baby toiletries and supplies including Johnson and Johnson, Pigeon, and Chicco. Buggies, toys, and some clothes are also stocked. Has feeding area and baby changing facilities. Clean, modern, and well organised with attractive prices.

Owned by Hero, the first store opened in 2002 as direct competition to Carrefour, although is not of the same high standard. Excellent place to stock up on your household cleaning items and basic foodstuffs. Fruit and vegetables are mainly local and very reasonably priced. Also sells meat and fish. Baby products and formula are well stocked although no jars as yet. Check out the stationary and toy section, you may be surprised. Around the store there are numerous small shops offering all manner of items, toys, clothes , shoes and DVD's to name a few. Also pharmacy , cafes and various eateries. Location at Poins Square and at Semanggi have slot coin game areas for children.

Grand Lucky Superstore (previously Clubstore)
Extensive range of high quality fruit and vegetables. Fish is fresh with some at sushi grade. Meat not as good quality as the fish. Grand Lucky does have some imported items that you won't find elsewhere though. There are plenty of baby supplies as well as Lego and Playmobil items but at imported prices. Household items were well stocked and reasonably priced. The staff are very helpful. Well worth a visit.

Makro
Makro is a bulk-buy store, used by a lot of businesses to purchase their supplies. There's no joining fee but do bring a photocopy of your KITAS card and fill in an application form. Every time you go there they will ask to see your membership card. They carry everything from electronic goods to gardening and pet supplies, linen, toys, as well as all the usual lines you’d find in a supermarket. The grocery lines are packaged in lots of 2 or more and fruit and vegetables are sold at 1kg minimum, so it’s a good place to do a once-a-month shop. It’s one of the few places guaranteed to have a stock of bulk packets of disposable nappies. Makro have one hard and fast rule which the staff will not budge on: there are forklifts operating, so they very sensibly do not allow children under under 140 cm in height to enter the premises (they have a measuring chart)! You may bring in your child under the stipulated height if you sign an accident disclaimer form at the entrance desk.

Ranch Market
All of its stores now have organic fruit and vegetables from Agatho Agro Farm in Bogor. Deliver high quality fresh French pastries and bread. Almost like at home (I'm French)!The croissants taste great, my favorite is the brioche. But go for the apple turnover, they are really yummy.You can order bread (but no baguette). They also make some very nice cakes and tarts (pies). Make sure to put your order no later than 12o’clock the day before you want your delivery.Not cheap, but worth it if you want to indulge yourself over the week-end. They also deliver during the week.
