Outdoor Activities

Playgrounds

Playparq (Previously Prefere 72 Playground)
A great playground particularly for older kids. There is water play area that starts midday, climbing, swings and slides. There is no restriction for children going on play equipment with wet swimmers so can be very slippery and dangerous for smaller children. There is also an air-conditioned indoor area for the little ones with a ball pit and little slides in a safe area including a cafe and seating. A bit more "urban," no green spaces or trees. Can be closed for parties so call ahead.

The Playground
A little oasis in Jakarta with very safe and clean play equipment in a quiet atmosphere. The playground area is shaded and well padded, and is mainly for the younger kids. But there is also a flying fox, bike track, and basketball nets for older ones. Water play area now also open, one small slide for little ones and a big one for the big kids! Fountains, ball game, safe surface and strict about not allowing children with wet swimmers on to dry playground so safer for smaller children. There are lots of trees that provide shade to the grassy area, and there is a grill and open-sided huts for recreation. The Playground is gated and guarded. Birthday parties can be held here. Only kids are charged entrance fees, parents/nannies enter free. There is a membership scheme which saves you money if you visit very regularly.

The Playground has a café on-site.

Daily entrance is Rp. 65,000 per child, accompanied by a maximum of 2 adults. Extra adults are Rp. 50,000 each. Monthly, quarterly and annual memberships also available. Birthday parties can be held, but no more than 40 child guests allowed and this is now strictly enforced.

Go-Karting

Speedy Karting
Addictive fun! Due to the safety gear worn it can get hot but at the end of each turn it gives you a chance to cool down and watch the other rev heads screeching around this skiddy course. There are smaller karts for the under 10s, 5 karts per session and each seem to go pretty well. Prices are Rp 35,000 for the first 6 minutes and Rp 30,000 for subsequent sessions. Kids have to be 1.25m tall.

Paintball

Bogor Paintballing
This centre near Bogor is more suitable for older children, aged 10 +. There is an outdoor and indoor arena which is handy as Bogor is known as the wettest place in Java. My son described it as exotic but I think he means there is a lot of lush vegetation around. There are several wrecked cars to hide behind. Protective safety gear is provided but long trousers are essential. Refreshments are available. Need some Bahasa Indonesian if phoning through a booking.

Water Parks

Ocean Park Water Adventure
Opened November 2006 and claims to be Southeast Asia's largest. Has a huge wave pool, a 500-meter-long lazy river, and a pirate ship for children to play in. A 3.5 hectare complex next to the German Centre.

Pondok Indah Water Park (Taman Air)
The water park has 6 pools: one paddling pool for young children; a lazy river that slowly goes around (has sharp pool floor in places where the underwater jets are located); a large Olympic-sized swimming pool, and two water slides, one that has large tubes for sliding down on, the other (larger) one for older kids only (6 years and up). There are changing rooms with showers at both entrances to the water park. We recommend that you go early in the morning. Generally not busy on a Saturday morning or during the week. It’s possible to organize a pool party in combination with Kidsport activities for children 5 years old and over who can swim (organized through Kidsport for Saturday mornings only). These are pretty well organised, but we would recommend adult supervision in addition to the party organisers for groups of more than 8-10 children.

Snow Bay Waterpark –Taman Mini Indonesia
Opened in 2011, this is a small but fun water park, so called due to the artificial snow covered rocks and life-sized polar bear statues. The Snow Bay Beach Pool features waves every hour, lasting for about 15 minutes; 2 children’s pools; the Flush Bowl (great fun) and assorted slides including a speedy spin slide and a tube coaster.
For those who prefer something quieter, there is the Typhoon River (!) to float along using inflatable rings.
From the staircases to the flumes, you have an interesting view across the park.
The park is ideal for young children as it is not so big; older children may prefer the slides at Waterboom.
Food and drinks are not allowed to be taken into the park. There are food outlets offering Indonesian and Western meals. You can also rent a bale. Note that weekends can be very busy.

Water Boom
A beautifully landscaped Bali-inspired water park with stone bridges carrying you over the lazy river that meanders throughout the park. You can camp at one of the many seating areas that are shaded with umbrellas and trees. For the little ones up to 3 years old there is a pirate ship with small slides surrounded by shallow pools and for older ones, there are slides nestled into the ‘Hilly Forest’. For the more adventurous, there are the big 16-meter-high slides. Qualified lifeguards are on every corner. The whole park is well organised and clean. There are lockers, baby change facilities, and well-located toilets. It is not encouraged to bring your own food. This is a great
day out, though during the weekends and public holidays it can be pretty hectic and overcrowded. Midweek, you will probably have the place to yourselves, so get hubby to bunk off work for a morning! Leave Jakarta before 08:00 and it should take you an hour. Leave before 14:30 to miss the traffic coming home. Waterbom Jakarta
This massive water recreational facility covers an area of about 35,000 m2. Conveniently located just off the toll road, Waterbom Jakarta only takes 15 minutes from Semanggi toll and 30 minutes from TB Simatupang toll. The clean, modern, tropical-design water park has 15 water slides. One of the fastest water slides can reach up to 70 km/hour. For the little ones they have a kiddy pool playground area. They also have a euro-bungy trampoline. Gazebos at the park are available for rent. We suggest that you rent gazebo when you are there, because there are no shaded areas at the park. Finally when you’re tired and hungry the park has quite a good range of food and drink at their clean food-court area.
We suggest that you go early in the morning. On weekends, the water park is usually quiet in the morning and starts to get busy around 2 pm. Admission to the park is Rp.120.000 per person.

Walking, Cycling & Running

Unless you are lucky enough to live in an area like Kemang Dalam with its wide, quiet, leafy streets, you will have to go further a field for the children to practice riding their bikes or to walk with some freedom of movement. Bukit Golf in Pondok Indah is a quiet place where you could walk or cycle with the kids and the grounds of The Dharmawangsa hotel in Jl. Brawijaya, Kebayoran Baru have soft grassy areas which are good for toddlers.

Here are some recommended locations:
• Jalan Sudirman-Car Free Sundays.
Every Sunday morning from 6am-12 noon, Jalan Sudirman/Thamrin is closed to traffic from Ratu Plaza to the Monas monument. Cycle, jog, run, inline-skate or just walk, it’s up to you!
• Taman Suropati, Menteng — Evening and early-morning walks, bike rides. Pigeons present.
• Borobodur Hotel — Good jogging track, playground, children's club and pool. Membership and day rates available.
• National Monument Park (Monas), Gambir — Walking, kite-flying, musical fountains on Sundays at 7 p.m. Go to the top of the monument (quieter during the week) or go for a horse-and-buggy ride.

Also see the following places in our Days Out in this chapter for other great places such as Ragunan Zoo, Cibodas and Bogor Botanical Gardens, and Cibubur camping ground. idGuides have a range of options for guided family treks around Sentul.

The ISCI jogging track (see section on Family Sports Clubs) offers good opportunities for a bit of fresh air and limb stretching. Alternatively join one of the following running and walking clubs.

Junior Hash House Harriers

This Hash House Harriers group has a 'Horrors' Hash for children on the last Sunday of every month starting at 10 a.m. This is a great way to get out of the city to do something that the whole family can enjoy.
You can read about one family's experience with the Junior Hash here.
