January 2012 Newsletter

Happy New Year to all you YBS supporters! We hope you had an enjoyable festive season and 2012 has welcomed you generously with open arms. Thank you for supporting our work throughout 2011, and we hope that you continue doing so in this New Year J The school semester began for our Early Learning Centre (ELC) students on January 6th, and due to the efforts of volunteer Sara Kline and the Jakarta International School, our feeding program is now underway! Our last Family Guide report gave you an overview of our activities in November. This report will pick up from where it left off so you can see what we were up to in December.

Before the Christmas recess, Starbucks sponsored our Early Learning Centre students’ trip to Kota tua (the old city known as Old Batavia or Old Jakarta). Kota tua was formerly the centre of commerce for Indonesia. Here, there are a number of significant establishments such as the former Town Hall of Batavia (now the Jakarta History Museum), the Wayang (shadow puppet) Museum and the former Court of Justice of Batavia (now the Fine Art and Ceramic Museum). The students explored the Mandiri Bank museum, Indonesia Bank Museum, Jakarta History Museum and Wayang Museum as part of their Kota tua tour. It was a great and educational way to end the school semester!

On December 2nd, YBS also performed deworming and free health examinations for the residents of Lapak. Lapak is a low-income community that is the target of many YBS programs. For instance, many of our ELC students came from Lapak, which is home to predominantly scavengers. 73 residents took advantage of our health examinations and 58 children benefited from the deworming initiative.

Jakarta International School (JIS) has been incredibly generous and now sponsors our feeding program. Through their ‘Read to Feed’ fundraiser held throughout October and November 2011, JIS raised US$6,136.45. Wow! JIS has also been supportive in allowing our Small Skills Enterprise sewing and handicrafts group to sell their products at their school. Thank you volunteer Sara Kline for helping to establish this relationship between YBS and JIS.  It was with great sadness that we farewelled Sara as she departed to begin her PeaceCorps assignment in Thailand. YBS wishes her all the best!

And now, thank you, Family Guide reader, for reading our latest YBS newsletter. Our sincere appreciation goes to The Family Guide of Jakarta, British Women’s Association, Starbucksfor inviting the children for a discovery tour of Kota Tua and volunteers Ibu Ririn, Ibu Clara, and all our supporters, you know who you are. We look forward to sharing another exciting year with you.

Requests for assistance:
YBS is beginning the next bout of feeding program, which is targeted at malnourished children under the age of 5. The project will run in two areas over the span of one year. The programme will include: community health training (to be administered by YBS staff and volunteers); and nutritional support and skills training in targeted communities.  There is a volunteering position open to individuals who have a background in Nutrition. Please get in touch with YBS if you are interested in this position.

If you have spare material (cloth), please kindly donate them to our micro-credit sewing skills group.

If you would like to donate your time to teaching the YBS staff English for an hour a week, please contact YBS. No qualifications are required, just the willingness to share your English skills.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Our bundle of interventions - feeding programme; health, hygiene, nutrition education; pre-school education and scholarships; skills training; micro-credit; training of trainers - used in all our projects, but tailored to each community's specific wants and needs, is well known to help communities to lift themselves out of extreme poverty. If we can educate people about the importance of good nutrition and assist them in obtaining it, malnutrition will be a thing of the past. Sadly it is still a widespread problem: 33 % of children under five, (according to the Jakarta Globe, Jan 10, 2010) throughout Indonesia. With your support we could help many more people to reach their potential.

In Jakarta we welcome volunteers - particularly those with a healthcare background, or those with creative skills or an enthusiasm for teaching English - please contact rpj.fmch@gmail.com or drop into our new premises at Jl Haji Naim II No. 10, Kebayoran Baru, Cipete Utara (on the western/ northbound side of Jl Antasari).

A regular monthly donation would allow us to continue and extend our work.
